In more than 30 years of being involved with the news media as a journalist, professor, corporate communications specialist and media trainer I have never, ever, seen someone such as Republican candidate Donald Trump so successfully neuter the news media.
It is absolutely unprecedented, and in all honesty, a pretty remarkable occurrence we may never see again.
From the onset of his campaign, myself and others in my profession have been waiting for him to fail. The news media hated him and was waiting to pounce.
I told a colleague shortly after Trump disrespected John McCain about his time as a POW Trump was toast. There was no way he could recover from his awful remarks.
It didn’t even phase him.
Trump went on and disparaged fellow candidate Carly Fiorina’s looks. By all measures of political correctness, he should have been dead in the water. It didn’t even cause a ripple.
He actually pulled out of a debate because he didn’t like journalist Megyn Kelly’s questions from an earlier Fox News debate. It didn’t leave a scratch on him, and even hurt the network’s ratings.
The news media has vainly attempted to attack him mercilessly. The magazine “National Review” devoted an entire issue to prominent conservatives opposing him. It was a waste of good paper.
The Huffington Post refuses to even cover him as a legitimate political candidate and only does stories on him in its “Entertainment” section. Nada.
Veteran journalist Bill Moyers says in a vitriolic column that Trump’s rise “has been a dreadful performance by the press and by party leaders.”
How has Trump achieved such mastery over the news media? Very simply, he has gone on the offensive. If he doesn’t like a media question he attacks the questioner. The news media is flummoxed dealing with someone who refuses to be bullied by them.
Trump also realizes the media needs him, and he feels that puts him in the power position. It does.
Rather than be bullied by the news media as candidates (and others) have for years, he actually bullies them. The news media needs him for stories and he takes full advantage of the situation.
Whereas most candidates find themselves trying to respond to news media attacks, Trump ignores the attacks and goes on the offensive. When you factor in the public’s ongoing dislike and mistrust of the media it makes him a hero even more when they attack him.
The irony of the situation is that Trump receives so much free publicity by media outlets he has to spend comparatively very little on advertising for his campaign. Despite millions of dollars spent on advertising on his campaign Jeb Bush was forced to drop out of the race after being overwhelmed by the Trump free media machine.
In my career in working with some of the nation’s top executives, I have never seen anything like what Donald Trump has accomplished so far in his bid for the presidency of the United States.
It is a remarkable ongoing case study in media relations.

TRUMP KNOWS WHAT SELLS
Dear Mr. Landsberg: Thanks for posting this item!! Yes, Trump’s manipulation of the media is most impressive to watch!! I suspect it come down to him being a very shrewd businessman. He knows that the media needs him, and he plays on the fact. He also knows what “sells”-and in modern America nothing sells likes attacks on journalists. Also, he is enough of a brutal realist about us humans to know that there are all sorts of things that we would prefer not to be true but which actually are true.
To mention only the most extreme example: As a properly brought up Southern gentleman I was offended by his attacks on Megan Kelly-but lots of men loved it. And this will get me in a lot of trouble because women, like men, cannot handle the truth-but lots of women were gleeful at his attacks on Megan Kelly. To a large number of women, Megan Kelly is the beautiful blonde who gets ahead on her looks-and they hate her for that. Now, I feel that that is most unfair to Ms. Kelly who really is a good journalist-but lots of women I know disagree and say “she traded on her looks for her career.”
Trump has no illusions about us humans-and he knows that journalists are in the unfortunate position of always having to pretend to believe things that they know are not true-and that makes them highly vulnerable to manipulation. Take care!! Sincerely, Respectfully and In Christ, Ernest Evans
WHY FOLKS SUPPORT TRUMP
I found this article really interesting on why people support Donald Trump. Judging by this criteria, there is no for the media to reach these people:
http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2016/01/donald-trump-2016-authoritarian-213533
“Since the rise of Nazi Germany, it has been one of the most widely studied ideas in social science. While its causes are still debated, the political behavior of authoritarians is not. Authoritarians obey. They rally to and follow strong leaders. And they respond aggressively to outsiders, especially when they feel threatened.”
MEDIA’S USE OF ‘HERO’
Dear Mr. Landsberg: Again, a most insightful posting!! If you want one example of why the media cannot “take Trump down” let me note the reaction of most of the print media to the story of Hessburg, Kansas a few days ago. A police officer, armed only with a pistol, went into an office building to confront a gunman armed with an automatic rifle. He killed the gunman-thereby saving numerous lives. The reaction of the print media? References to this officer generally had the word “hero” about him-but almost always in quotation marks.
If a man who puts his life on the line for people he is a hero in my book! But, apparently, not to most of the nation’s journalists-who tremble in terror at offending the PC Police. A bunch of careerist cowards like the modern US press corps do not have the credibility to get the public to see the truth about how dangerous Trump is. America’s press corps of today is not, repeat not, composed of people like Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite. Sincerely, Respectfully and In Christ, Dr. Ernest Evans
MEDIA NEEDS TO WISE UP
Dear Mr. Landsberg: Yesterday Donald Trump told a female reporter she was beautiful. Media went ballistic with Pearl Harbor sized headlines that “Trump sexually harasses woman reporter.” Latest polls this morning indicate that Trump is now at the highest percentage (46%) of GOP voters that he has been at since his campaign began. I am quite sure that Trump knew what the media would do if he told that female reporter she was beautiful, and he also knew how GOP voters would react to the media frenzy.
If the media does not wise up to how Trump is using them they are going to end up making him President. Sincerely, Respectfully and In Christ, Dr. Ernest Evans
