There are mistakes in journalism. And then there are MISTAKES.

Kansas City Star columnist Jenee’ Osterheldt made a major one on Thursday after she profiled Kerwin Young in a full-page story in the newspaper’s “Preview” tabloid section.

Osterheldt lavished praise on Young, with much of it focused on him being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the group “Public Enemy.” The subhead on her story noted ” ROCK HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE KERWIN YOUNG IS STUDYING COMPOSITION AT UMKC.”

Unfortunately, Star Public Editor Derek Donovan was forced on Friday (4/19) to write a correction (Page A2) to Osterheldt’s story noting that “while musician Kerwin Young was a member of the group Public Enemy’s Bomb Squad production team, only the four core members of the group were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Young attended the ceremony with them.”

In fairness, UMKC had issued a news release stating that Young was to be inducted into the HOF and later issued a correction. However, during her interview of Young Osterheldt should have determined he was not going to be inducted.

The Star has tweaked the story on its Web site to note that Young will “take the stage with Public Enemy as the founding members are inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

However, very clearly (below) Osterheldt was under the belief Young was being inducted with the group.

It should be noted that the Star is now highlighting in the newspaper that Osterheldt’s “column will return.”
