Word-of-mouth continues to be the the most influential form of advertising and continues to increase in importance, according to a new global study by Nielsen undertaken in 58 countries.
“Recommendations from people I know” dominated the latest study by Nielsen Global Survey of Trust in advertising by coming in at 84%-a 6% increase since 2007. It is also referred to as “earned advertising.”
Coming in second place were “Branded Websites,” which were at 69% followed by “Consumer Opinions Posted Online” at 68%. (It should be noted a number of companies were recently caught writing fake reviews and heavily fined.)
Editorial content such as newspaper articles came in strong at 67% followed by ads on TV (62%). Text ads on mobile phones finished dead last at 37%.
Inside Radio had an interesting take on the Nielsen report.
“Ads on radio, television, in newspapers and in magazines continue to be among the most trusted forms of paid advertising, according to Nielsen’s new Trust In Advertising report. Radio is among the media where advertising is gaining consumer trust. Nearly six in ten respondents (57%) to Nielsen’s new global survey say they trust ads on radio this year, up from 54% in 2007.
“Ads on TV (62%), in magazines (60%), before movies (56%) and online banner ads (42%) also gained consumer trust. But word-of-mouth recommendations from friends and family, often referred to as earned advertising, are still the most influential, as 84% of global respondents said this source was the most trustworthy. It’s a big reason why live read ads on radio are so attractive to marketers.
“The survey shows that trust and action often go hand in hand. Radio’s take action performance was consistent with its trust score as more than half of respondents (55%) indicated they take action on ads they hear on the radio. Conducted from February 18-March 8, the survey polled more than 29,000 consumers in 58 countries, including the U.S.”
