MSNBC hosted a Democratic “Forum” with Rachel Maddow on Friday evening that was so lackluster that “Saturday Night Live” did a skit about it that noted, “In case you’re wondering what a forum is it’s a debate no one watches.”
On the other hand, an evening later SNL featured GOP frontrunner Donald Trump as its host. Overnight ratings for the show, according to TV Newser (LINK), declared it was the most-watched SNL since January 2002.
While liberal media outlets such as the Huffington Post and the Daily Beast (LINK) immediately went out of their way to trash his appearance, SNL executives were laughing all the way to the bank today. To them they only care about ratings and Trump delivers.
What makes the Trump appearance even more remarkable was the supporting cast at SNL might be the poorest group put together in decades. In addition, Latino activists tried to stop Trump from even hosting the show and protested. None of it mattered. Political correctness was tossed aside when it came to profits.
What this shows is Donald Trump might be the only candidate in this generation who does not need to kow-tow to the news media. He knows that the news media needs him and is able to play it for all its worth.
He knows how the corporate world works and that corporate media really only cares about its bottom line. A Hispanic group offered a $5,000 bounty to anyone who called Trump a racist during his monologue. SNL tossed aside political correctness and made a joke of the offer.
In the past Trump had the audacity to poke CNN for increasing advertising prices 400% for hosting a debate featuring him. He said the network should donate its excess profits to veterans. Of course, it refused.
When CNBC hosted a recent Republican debate featuring Trump the cable channel actually wanted to increase the time by an hour in order to generate more revenue. The only reason the tactic failed was Trump refused to participate and even called MSNBC out on it during its own debate.
Trump is in the enviable position that very likely no other Presidential candidate has ever been in. He doesn’t need to buy advertising from the networks. The networks need him. They beg him to appear on their shows.
He dictates coverage and if the news media doesn’t like it he will cut them off. Other candidates have to beg or even pay for coverage.
With a Trump candidacy we are witnessing a first in media coverage. He delivers ratings and helps pad the bottom lines of the global media corporations. He knows they need him and will use it to his advantage.
He knows greed will prevail and so far he is correct.

NEWS MEDIA IS A BUSINESS
Dear Mr. Landsberg: As you so often do in your blog, you cut right to the heart of the matter: Namely, that the media is a business in which the bottom line is all-important. Yes, Trump is frightfully un-PC-but he gets viewers, and that is what concerns the media.
I have mentioned before on this blog the remarkable story of the TV Show “Touched By an Angel”. The critics were irrationally and hysterically critical of this show-when it was announced it was voted by the critics to be the first new show to be cancelled. Instead, it became an enormous success. And, as one who personally knows many evangelical Christians, the real audience of this show was even bigger than Nielsen indicated: I personally know lots of strongly Christian families whose only show watched each week was “Touched”-these people do not watch enough TV to be included in a Nielsen survey so their viewing would not be picked up. So, you are right about “The Donald”-the media needs him at least as much as he needs them.
Sincerely, Respectfully and in Christ, Dr. Ernest Evans
