The management at KMBC, the Kansas City ABC affiliate, seem to be taking the slogan, “Out with the old, in with the new” to heart as the Hearst-owned station will be bringing in younger talent to replace a pair of veterans at the station.
In the past week it was announced here that 25-year weatherman Joel Nichols was leaving the station over a contract dispute involving moving him out of his long-time morning slot. A short while later it was confirmed that the contract for 7-year KMBC veteran meteorologist Lisa Teachman was not renewed. She will be leaving at the end of the month.
Reliable sources have confirmed to BLC that KMBC will be bringing in meteorologists Neville Miller from Joplin, MO, and Nick Bender from Oklahoma City to fill the new vacancies. Bender will join KMBC in April and TV Spy reports he is jumping 107 markets up to KC.
A St. Louis native, Miller joined the ABC affiliate for a second time in August 2011 as a meteorologist. He worked at the station from 2006-2008 while working on his degree from the University of Missouri. Between that time he briefly worked at WCIV in Charleston, SC.
Bender is a native Pennsylvanian and graduated from Penn State in 2006. Since graduation he has held positions at KVII in Amarillo, TX, KOTV News in Tulsa, OK.
He has been a meteorologist at KWTV News 9 in Oklahoma City, OK. since January 2008.

PERSONNEL STABILITY AT 9
The attractive nature of KMBC over the years was its personnel stability. People got to know the staff over years of service. This would seem to signal a change. My first impression is it will be detrimental in nature.
MEAN JOPLIN
It says Joplin,mo in here and you mean Columbia,mo and Miller starts when Lisa leaves at end of month and might give what shifts they are going go to work.
MORE COST AWARE
Obviously KMBC’s new program is imitating market 287 like some other local stations. Much like radio, television isn’t becoming more professional, it is becoming more cost aware. Are the folks at Hearst getting a check for chasing folks to cable?
NOW AT KCTV
Lisa has landed on the mornings at ch 5
I quit watching 9 news when they left
