Dave Stewart has been covering sports for decades in the Kansas City area and has pretty much seen it all in that time.

After all, the former sports director at KMBC—who joined Metro Sports in 2001—has captured two Emmy Awards and was even named the pretigious “Joe McGuff Sports Journalist of the Year” during his career.

That is until Saturday when he was to record a sports “first.”

That’s when Stewart, a Shawnee Mission and Kansas State graduate, was able to see his son Steven score his first touchdown ever on a fake field goal attempt as Baker University beat Benedictine College, 38-28, in a key NAIA game.

Steven not only scored a touchdown, but added a 50-yard field goal and five extra points for good measure.

The victory now puts Baker in position to go to the NAIA national playoffs if the Wildcats can beat Graceland next week.

Bottom Line asked Stewart to give a synopsis of the touchdown scamper.

“Baker U installed this fake field goal more than a month ago, working on it in practice, but never attempting it in a game till Saturday,” he says. “They wanted to run it at the right time and against the right personnel/formation.

“The play involved the holder (Bryan Williams) spotting the ball as if it was a regular field goal. As soon as he touched the tip of the ball to the ground, he flipped it over his head to Steven who circled around beyond him so he’d have momentum towards the goal line.

“The snapper (Myron Tipton-Frosh, Olathe East) and holder did a great job, in addition to those on the FG protect team. As hoped for, the rusher came flying in and Steven went past him, not uncontested to the end zone, but Benedictine’s last, lone hope to catch him never did touch him.”

Stewart, who has taken sideline photos for Baker soccer, baseball and football, says he wanted to make sure to get good photos of his son’s big moment (photos below).

Not only was Steve ‘s touchdown special, but there was even more to the special moment.

“I fought back tears after the game when Steven showed me his Grandmother’s name written on the tape on his right wrist,” he says. “My Mom died Oct 23, a month after falling and breaking a hip. It’s been an emotional stretch to say the least.”

Steven, who was recruited to Baker primarily for soccer after being all-state, all-metro at Olathe East and leading Kansas Class 6-A in scoring his senior year. Last year, he was senior captain for Baker’s first-ever Final 4 team. He was a four-year starter in baseball at Baker with all-conference honors.

But what he did on a football field for Baker University is a memory that will stay with his proud dad forever. And there was dad taking photos of the entire event.
