KSHB’s stalwart investigative reporter Ryan Kath and the area’s top blogger, Tony Botello of tonyskansascity.com, continue to spearhead an effort to determine why $15,000 paid to boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. for an event that was cancelled has not been repaid.

Kath (story below) has stayed on the story from the start as as Botello (LINK). If the money is ever repaid it will very likely be because of their efforts.

KCMO elected officials paid a group $15K to bring world-famous boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. to town for an event scheduled on December 8. The event never happened, but the group cashed the check and kept the money.

Kansas City City Manager Troy Schulte demanded a refund of the city money by a Dec. 20 deadline. It was ignored.

KCTV is now looking into the story, however, Kath and Botello have been the most dilligent in staying with it on an ongoing basis.

A recent column by Kansas City Star columnist Lewis Diuguid almost made it seem like ever seeing the money again was laughable.

“Mayweather has to be laughing at the stern letter Schulte sent to him…” noted Diuguid. “Unfortunately, the check has already been cashed.”

It’s good that some media outlets still think stealing $15,000 from taxpayers is important.

Ironically, Mayweather is considered one of the wealthiest athletes in the world. Why he would damage his image over what he considers chump change is baffling.
