One would be hard-pressed not to get emotional (as fellow anchor Elizabeth Alex did) after watching KSHB Action News’ Mark Clegg’s touching story about a couple who are likely celebrating their final Valentine’s Day together.

Clegg’s piece (shot by multi-media journalist Tim Hellhake and edited by Clegg) focused on Norma and Phil Silvain of Lake Lotawana, who have been married 63 years.

However, Phil is now in Kansas City Hospice House with pancreatic cancer.

Clegg reported that despite not being too responsive over the past day or so, Phil gave Norma her Valentine’s Day kiss.

“Well I just went up to him and I said ‘Phil, may I have a kiss?’ And he puckered up his lips and he gave me a kiss,” said Norma.

Clegg’s piece also focused on the volunteers at Hospice House (called “Angels) and a special lady, Monica Brown, who comforts those in hospice care and their loved ones. But the Silvain story took center stage on this special day.

Clegg’s final thoughts on the Silvain’s seemed to summarize the story perfectly.

“As Norma and Phil face this final journey together, Norma says Valentine’s Day is special, but the secret to love is not found in one February day,” noted Clegg .

“Every day was a nice day for us,” she explained. “It really was.”
