The November TV Nielsen sweeps period concluded this week with basically the same results as they have been for years with KMBC once again taking the ratings crown at every news period throughout the day.
In what might have been the strangest ratings period in ratings history, all TV stations except KMBC had major executive changes during the crucial period. Fox 4′s News Director Bryan McGruder left his station before the sweeps kicked off; KSHB had no GM or news director for the sweeps period and KCTV lets it VP and GM go in the middle of the sweeps.
As it turned out, KMBC edged Fox 4 in the hotly contested mornings period as it has almost since the day Kris Ketz took over as the main KMBC anchor, and at 5 p.m. KMBC edged KCTV. In one of the most hotly contested periods, KMBC squeaked by Fox 4 at 6 p.m with a 6.2 rating and 11 share to Fox 4′s 6.1 and 11 share.
At the important 10 p.m. period KMBC and KCTV battled it out for the top spot, but the Hearst-owned station won with a 7.5 rating and 14 share to KCTV’s 7.0/13.
During the sweeps period KMBC announced that this will be the final 10 p.m. sweeps for anchor icon Larry Moore, who will cut back his schedule after 40 years and begin doing the 6 p.m. weekday news. Newcomer Len Jennings will be taking his 10 p.m. spot opposite Lara Moritz.
KSHB GAINS ERASED
Wow. Poor KSHB! Having absolutely no management or consistent, strong interim leadership, can really do this to a station!
Nearly two and a half years of gains have virtually vanished, almost completely erased. Hard to believe now that just back in July they were fighting KMBC for the #1 spot at 5 and 6pm, and almost fighting WDAF for #2 in the mornings!

Not surprising… WDAF on camera people need to QUIT talking to each other so much and focus on the VIEWERS… One reason I seldom watch WDAF anymore !

KSHB false advertising. “Leader” of nothing.
WDAF was impressive this period, you have to give credit there. I don’t think anyone would have expected them to be where they are in these numbers.
ACKNOWLEDGE SOURCE
Mr. Landsdburg, if you are going to take these ratings press releases direct from KMBC, could you at least acknowledge your source? Notice they don’t include any of the newscasts they didn’t win. Also, how about a demographic break out when it arrives? That’s what the account execs actually sell to advertisers.
If you have a source for ratings feel free to share them with me. Yes, KMBC issued a news release about its ratings win and I then acquired ratings from other sources. If I operated a competing station that won a time period I would certainly notify people of that victory.
