KMBC DOMINATES LATE NEWS, BUT SLIPS DURING MAY SWEEPS

KMBC has dominated the television ratings in Kansas City for so long that it became boring to report that the ABC affiliate had captured every news period during the day.

However, with the recently completed May TV sweeps period Wednesday night, those days have seemed to come to an end.

KMBC won during the 4:30 a.m. hour and the prestigious 10 p.m. news period, but that was it.

WDAF-Fox 4 won the mornings ratings race and at 6 p.m. with KCTV winning the 5 p.m. slot. NBC affiliate KSHB finished last at every time period throughout the day.

The good news for KMBC is that the station finished with a 36% advantage over KCTV AT 10 p.m..-the biggest advantage over a competitor at that hour in three years. That late news rating also reflects an increase of 7.8% year-to-year and 9.2% from February 2013.

4:30am
KMBC 2.0/12
WDAF 1.7/10

    KSHB STATUS
It’s kinda disappointing that KSHB is in last in all time slots. they need to do something that will boost ratings!

I know many of the folks at KSHB and am confident that GM Brian Bracco will turn that station around.

    KSHB SITUATION
So now I must ask, what do you think KSHB’s problem is?

A station that started from the bottom (no Drake pun intended), nearly rose to the top, only to plunge back down into the ratings abyss of hell certainly is it’s own tale.

    SHOCKED
Shocked the Hearst Station was in 3rd place at 5&6pm and I guess Dr.OZ not bringing in the big ratings like Oprah. KMBC should flip flop Dr. OZ and Phil with Oz at 3 and Phil at 4pm.

KSHB reason their down because Scripps killed Wheel of Fortune & Jeopardy from all their owned stations, but 41 still carries Jeopardy, but Wheel moved 41 to #2 during the 6pm hour, but FOX4 doing well at 6pm….

Surprise KCTV moving on up, but KC very competitive which most markets aren’t…

    YOKELS’ THOUGHTS
Glad KMBC killed that scroll of viewers opinions during their 5:00 and 6:00 really quick. If I wanted to read a bunch of yokels’ thoughts about the news I’d read the comments sections at Yahoo or Tony’s KC.

    KEY IS PROGRAMMING
It’s all about the programming. Viewers are partial to one affiliate programming over another so just stick with that channel for their local news. KSHB is a perfect example of no matter how great the talent is, how updated the set is, it still has to rely on programming to capture and keep the viewers. All the others are stuck looking like they are in the 90′s with wardrobe, set, and mediocre cliched talent yet come out on top.
Max Headroom could be reporting the news on all these channels and programming would show the top winner each time. I want my MTV!
