Kirk Black, who spent eight years as General Manager with KCTV in Kansas City before assuming duties as VP and GM with parent company Meredith Corporation’s WGCL in Atlanta, has resigned from that post.
The official word from Meredith is that the controversial Black “resigned to pursue other interests.” In PR circles that generally means he was shown the door.
According to TV Spy, Black also served as senior vice president for Meredith’s Local Media Group, a role which included oversight of the company’s national sales operations in Chicago and LA and the company’s eastern hub in Atlanta Broadcasting & Cable reported other WGCL staffers, including a top sales manager at the CBS-affiliate, departed suddenly today.
Prior to joining WGCL in 2009, Black was general manager of KCTV-KSMO for eight years and has also been general manager of WNEM in Flint, MI, and WIBW in Topeka.
Wasn’t he the one who started the late breaking sensational, “car in a ditch”, “vacant house fire”, and other ridiculous nonsense?
Yes. He was the one who gave Kansas City the “Live, Late-Breaking, Investigative!!” format.
I give up. What makes him “controversial?”

He was often criticized for sensationalizing the news and making minor weather changes into major events.

The wonderful thing about rumors is that they are all based on some semblance of the truth. Maybe he thought he was untouchable because he was at the top and with power comes trouble.
He has an affair with an employee in KC, got caught & gets promoted to Atlanta. Rumor has it he did it again in Atlanta…what, no promotion? Meredith needs to make up it’s mind…he should have got another promotion!
I am surprised this hasn’t caught up with Kirk sooner. I watched his first family suffer through the trauma of the affair at KCTV and how it tore the them apart. The ironic part is he is having an affair on the lady he married…who was the person he had an affair with at KCTV. Intervention needed immediately!
