KCTV might be battling rival KMBC for ratings supremacy in Kansas City, but the local CBS affiliate is far an away the leader in unique visitors to its Web site, according to recent statistics.
According to the Internet reporting system comScore, KCTV recorded 614,000 visitors in January to outpace KMBC, which was second at 498,000. Fox4′s Web site was a distant third at 269,000, slightly ahead of KSHB 41 Action News at 259,000.
“KCTV5.com has made significant changes to improve navigation of the site and create a more pleasant user experience,” a KCTV spokesperson told Bottom Line. “Our focus over the last two years has been to provide the Kansas City area with the most up to the minute news and weather.”
The station says its Web site is a way of responding to the way people are getting their news these days.
“This is in response to how people are consuming news and information. KCTV5.com is an extension of our news product and we aspire to provide Up to the minute information to our users when they want it.”
KCTV says it wants to be Kansas City’s “Home Page” for information.
“Our goal is to serve our immediate area and maintain a regional and national following when it comes to news and information about the Kansas City area. We will continue to develop and evolve in this space as it pertains to our business. Developing new sections of our website as well as app development has been a large part of our ongoing efforts to be Kansas City’s home page!!”

  1. PERSPECTIVE says:

Damn, how about a little perspective?

Would that be 615,000 visitors per month? Per week? Every fifteen seconds?

By failing to say what the measure of time is for the TV sites, you render the whole story somewhat useless and irrelevant.

Not only that, you conveniently forget that kansascity.com has more visitors per month than those three sites put together. 3.8 million. Per month, anyway.

    Perspective. Try it today!

  2. your bias is showing says:

doesn’t the stars website do twice that traffic in a month? everybody knows you have it in for The Star worse than John Altevogt but damn.

  3. Jerk Circle says:

Ha ha. Is this a joke or something? comScore is not even an accurate measure of web traffic. It’s based on user surveys.

If you want to come back with some accurate, verifiable statistics, like through Omniture or something, OK. But this is drivel.

Plus, what is that? KCTV got 600,000 visitors in a day? A week? A month? A year?

Also there’s a big 800-pound Kansas City News Gorilla in the room that you’re not mentioning, and I’m not referring to “Slanderella” Botello.

C’mon Landesberg. Tell the whole story or don’t bother telling it at all.

Good Lord. One guy in town claims millions of hits based on Alexa rankings. We use compete.com. comScore is one source for TV stations.
If you must know, comScore says the KC Star had 1.6 million unique visitors in January. Yes, that far surpasses any TV stations in KC.
Compare that to CNN.COM’s 48 million visitors, the Huffington Post’s 40 million or the New York Times’ 32 million and it is put into perspective.
