The suspense is over. KCSP’s outspoken afternoon sports talk show host Nick Wright, 27, is heading to KILT (ironically on the same station number as he is today: 610AM).
Wright will co-host a morning drive time show with former Houston Chronicle columnist John Lopez from 6-10 a.m. starting June 5.
As reported here earlier, Wright will signoff May 22 from Entercom’s KCSP to join the CBS affiliate.
“I know a lot of people wonder why I would leave,” the Houston Chronicle quoted Wright as telling listeners today on his show.
“Houston is the fourth biggest city. It’s a good opportunity for me, and it’s something I want to do. … I’m a little scared, but it’s a new challenge and a new opportunity and a good thing for me and my family.”
The Chronicle noted that Wright, who interned at sports talk leader WHB and joined KCSP following graduation from Syracuse University, was among a half-dozen finalists for the job, meshed well with Lopez during his audition.
“People are blown away with how hard he works,” Lopez told the Chronicle. “He feels he was born and raised to do this, and he’s really good. If Vandermeer is Tom Brady, with all the experience and being at top of the game, I would compare (Wright) to Cam Newton. He can throw for 4,000 yards, and he will get better.”

Good Riddance!!!!
Interesting…he’s leaving Kansas City and his 2 PM to 6 PM gig for a morning spot were he’s a co-host. Something tells me he left while the getting was good. I think he was close to getting fired or demoted after his annual “Royals Bump.”
From the comments section of the Houston Chronicle article people in Houston are not too happy with Wright coming in. Some are already calling this a fail and called Wright a Yankee.
Wright will soon be run out of Houston. But will he be accepted back to Kansas City and 610 when he comes back. His arrogance and making fun of other hosts on his and other Entercom stations makes me think it’s Houston or bust. If he bombs there it’s Des Moines, Tulsa or Omaha.
Houston is the fourth largest city in the US.
Great move to get to number 6 market…(not number 4, nick)….and you get to go to station ranked number 19…..you are used to low ranked stations with crappy pro sports teams…..you should feel right at home
Nick was either gonna get fired or he takes this co host job. Either or. Wasnt his choice. his Fiance has kids here in KC. Needed a job so he had to do it.
It’s amazing to me how people love to make misery out of someones bliss. Everybody on these public forum sites seem to think they know everything about everything really they don’t have the slightest clue! Just because can listen to Wright on the radio should not make you feel entitled to know the man! Most jobs give annual Preformance reviews. Key word was Preformance. Don’t hate on the man because he had a higher IQ than you presently in the second grade.. Because intelligence can come of as arrogance you morons! Fact of the matter is like him or not your not done hearing his name if anything this is just the beginning of a local success story which I’m sure then everyone will change their tune. Houston is a mere stepping stone for whats ahead if you ask me! Definitely a step in the right direction! How stupid you other bloggers must feel for taking the time to sound ignorant! Why would 610 fire somebody who with one show took the station out of debt and turned its ratings into the number one am sports talk radio show for KC. My “hunch” is they matched Houston’s offer and it was the right time to leave! Congrats Nick I’m confident your gonna kill it just like you did here!

While I don’t normally reply to comments, when they are riddled with errors a little clarification is in order. WHB has been the ratings leader in KC for about a decade and KCSP is not even close. The only time KCSP beat WHB in the ratings was for one book because of the KC Royals games.
Nick Wright was initially on KC Royals broadcasts and bounced after a few months. He then went against WHB’s Soren Petro and lost badly. He was given the afternoon drive time slot and is still losing badly to Kevin Kietzman. In fact, when I printed the ratings showing how poorly he was doing he threatened to report me to Arbitron.
After more than two decades working with the KC media—radio, TV and newspapers— I can honestly say that I have the least respect for Nick Wright of anyone I have ever dealt with. They will learn very soon in Houston that he is a ruthless self-promoter and will do anything, and I mean anything, to get ahead. If his morning co-host there lasts six months it would be surprising.
An example of how he operates is that he once sent me an “anonymous” email saying he was a media buyer and that he heard that “Jason Whitlock was going to join Nick Wright’s afternoon show.” It was a very convincing email. Wright had hoped I would run the story to give him some exposure, and then he could deny it and try to make me look bad. Unfortunately for him, I could not verify the story and never ran it, but he bragged to a gossip blogger that I had run with his fake story. Never happened.
I honestly think that Nick Wright will eventually become successful like his idol, Keith Olbermann. He has the talent, drive and connections. But like Olbermann, eventually the bodies will pile up and he will become persona non grata in the media.
Good luck, Houston.
So by replying John, you are as sure as I am that you are replying to Nick himself. Sounds like him, everyone is dumb he is a genius. I am pumped that he is gone, I could not stand him. If he did not come so cheap, 610 would have dumped him long ago.
Yes, I assumed he was the author. The misspellings and typos while glossing himself was a classic Wright tactic…
Lets make something clear. Wright got the 2PM spot because he was there the longest and it was cheaper to promote from within than get some guy out of town.
For a guy who claims to have so much “success” he sure seemed to fail a lot in this town.
810 didn’t hire him out of college because they thought he wasn’t good enough. They thought he should of gone to a smaller market and work at the craft.
He bombed as a Royal pre and post-show host.
He went to late night and no one listened.
He went against Petro and got beat…badly.
He went up against KK and got beat…badly again.
Now he going to a large market were he’ll be the co-host.
For a guy who has so much success, he sure seems to fail a lot.
Not a fan and not a hater. For awhile, I listened to sports radio, including Wright’s show.
One of the first times I listened to Wright was in September, 2009. He was relating how Soren Petro called him a c**ksucker. He repeated the story several times, each time using the word; it wasn’t bleeped on the radio. I couldn’t believe it.
He asked the listeners, “So, do you think I’m a …?” Soren Petro says I’m a ….
You get the idea. He must have said it a dozen times. I couldn’t believe it. I thought, “Who is this guy?” I thought it was pretty thick-skinned of him to repeat such a vulgarity directed at him. Now, I suspect his reporting of the (true) story — including the repeated use of the vulgarity — was just to generate buzz.
BTW, I have learned that Petro is despicable, regardless of his tiffs with Wright.
The difference between Petro and Nick is Petro has earned being a prick. I have not heard that about Petro, but I do not doubt it. All of them guys seem like they are divas.
