The Kansas City Star and the Topeka Capital-Journal have announced (3/14) a multi-year contract to print the Capital-Journal in Kansas City.
Printing is scheduled to start at The Star’s state-of-the-art Press Pavilion with the May 14th edition.
The Star says because of the capacity of its presses, deadlines at both papers will not be affected.
However, according to a story in the Capital-Journal, 34 employees at that newspaper will lose their jobs in the switch.
The Star’s spacious glass press plant, at 1601 McGee St., opened six years ago and houses four KBA Commander presses. The Star also prints an edition of The Wall Street Journal, the Pitch, the Riverfront Times of St. Louis and about 40 other publications.
“This move is in no way a move away from the printed product, which remains a large and extremely important part of what we do,” Capital-Journal publisher Gregg Ireland said in a statement. “We’re not in the printing business. We’re in the information business.”
