The old joke is “When you find yourself in a hole stop digging.”
It seems as if rapper Kanye West never heard that slogan because an incident that could have been handled with a simple response is now turning into an international PR nightmare.
West was captured in a YouTube video telling everyone to stand up during his recent concert in Australia and refusing to perform until EVERYONE stood up. Unfortunately he singled out a wheelchair-bound kid in the audience and a woman with a prosthetic limb for ridicule.
“I’ve decided, I can’t do this song, I can’t do the rest of this show until everybody stands up,” West said. He often compares himself to Jesus.
He even got the crowd to pick on the poor concertgoers and yell at them to stand up.
When his mistake was pointed out he didn’t apologize as a normal person would. He simply blew it off and continued his concert.
That was his first problem.
His second problem now involves his handling of the situation since his initial insensitivity has gone viral around the world. Again, instead of apologizing for the incident and moving on, he went on an epic 5-minute rant against the news media.
West now claims he is the victim, which might be the worst way to handle this crisis situation. Ironically, the rapper with foul-mouthed lyrics says the media should lay off him because “he’s a married, Christian man.” (He is married to a Kardashian.)
This is part of his almost unintelligible rant from the Daily Beast (Link to entire story):
“What I want you to do is I want you to run the video everyone’s talkin’ about where I so-called screamed at somebody and everything. I want you to run that, right, since this is such big media-press-news and everything that obviously they trying to demonize me for. It’s like, ‘Welcome to today’s news, ladies and gentlemen.’ We’ve got Americans getting killed on TV, kids getting killed every weekend in Chicago, unarmed people getting killed by police officers…”
Below is the entire video of his stupid rant.
West’s biggest mistake was trying to address the situation himself. He is simply not intelligent enough to handle the situation and is acting on emotion rather than reasoning. If his handlers had any input they would have just had him shut up.
A statement similar to the one below would have ended the controversy. Instead, West has simply thrown gas on a fire he started.
“Kanye West is embarrassed and has personally apologized to the disabled people he pointed out during his recent concert. Of course, if he had any idea they had physical disabilities he never would have asked them to stand during his concert. As a sign of goodwill he has told both individuals he will donate $10,000 to the charity of their choosing as a way of making amends.”
