A new video (below) developed by Walmart has surfaced where the owners of Kansas City’s famed Golden Ox restaurant explain why they did a promotion comparing steaks offered at Walmart compared to the ones they offer.
The issue of whether it was a good PR move by Golden Ox to allow Walmart to do commercials was recently raised by Bottom Line. We asked the question that if customers couldn’t tell the difference between a Golden Ox steak or a Walmart steak would that hurt the Golden Ox brand? In fact, co-owner Bill Teel responded to our story why his restaurant did the commercials.
Now Teel and executive chef and co-owner Steve Greer are shown discussing their restaurant and Walmart. Teel notes that the Golden Ox creates a “great benchmark” for Walmart to compare its steaks with theirs.

I like the strategy. Yes, it’s risky but the Golden Ox’s reputation remains strong because of it’s product. Now if that were to falter, then they’d have a big problem
How great was this for The Golden Ox, owned by Brother Bill Teel!
One must also remember, you can have a great steak, but it still must be prepared right!!
This gives not only The Golden Ox, but Kansas City a nice shot for our city.A72M
I think the Golden Ox is a great restaurant. But, I wouldn’t have done this ad. Why go to the Ox, pay the price, etc., if I can get as good a steak, at a much lower price, at Walmart!
