That singing you might be hearing today is emanating from Fox 4 and is along the lines of “Let it snow, Let it snow, Let it snow!!!”
That’s because the station had a very good snow day Thursday reporting on the major storm that came through the area.
While ratings-wise the station did not do particularly well on the massive explosion at JJ’s restaurant a day earlier, the snow coverage certainly turned out very well.
Keep in mind, TV stations are currently in a torrid February sweeps period where higher ratings mean higher advertising rates.
Fox 4 didn’t win the 4:30 a.m. news slot or at 10 p.m., but dominated the ratings for everything in-between. The station did storm coverage from 4 a.m. in the morning until 1 p.m. in the afternoon.
The reasons? It could have been that more people were home-bound and preferred watching the station’s regular programming in addition to snow reports. Or, viewers may have preferred the station’s strong snow coverage.
“After a day that will be remembered in KC for a long time, FOX 4 is grateful that our viewers appreciate our storm coverage,” noted a station spokeswoman. “We are happy to serve our community when it needs it the most.”
The end result?
“Put simply,” says a media insider. “They had a great day.”

Which goes to my point that these ratings are not the norm when hyped by sensational stories and blizzards…
24/7 CHANNELS
We need a 24/7 Local News Channel and also a 24/7 Weather Channel with Action Weather Plus going to be leaving for COZI TV.
There’s “Metro Weather” on TWC , but who knows what’s happening there?
As to FOX 4′s high ratings during the weather emergency, I give kudos for their “Calm during the storm” mantra. Instead of the histrionics the weather types perform on the other channels when there is NO weather (and I mean the ominous talk of “storms invading parts of the metro!!!!!” when any weather is affecting greater Tightwad) FOX 4 weather staff lay out of the facts.

Ditto to Mike. I switched toFOx4 get away from the aspiring drama queen/kings on KMBC and KSHB. Enough already. Plan on missing network programming to watch the radar, cars stuck in the snow, interviews with drivers at Quik trip,and in the ditch, hardware store managers, Modot and Kdot managers, and can’t forget shots from the Summit st. Bridge over I-35.
