Anyone who has followed the strange career of sportswriter Jason Whitlock knows the following old adage fits him perfectly: “He has all the attributes of a dog, except loyalty…”

Once again that adage was evident after Whitlock leveled a very personal attack on fellow sportswriter Thayer Evans, who has co-authored a major story for Sports Illustrated involving major violations at Oklahoma State University. Evans, a former colleague of Whitlock’s at Fox Sports, has penned a story that might be one of the most revealing pieces on college athletics in years, but a jealous Whitlock seemed to find it necessary to lash out at Evans.

It is a pattern that has followed him during his entire career.

Whitlock, who recently joined ESPN, trashed his former sports editor at the Kansas City Star in a very personal manner when he left and later criticized fellow Star columnist Joe Posnanski, who is widely considered one of the top sports journalists in the nation. He was fired from both KC sports talk stations during his career and on both occasions criticized his employers.

“I try not to burn bridges, but he napalms them,” said Dan Le Batard, a longtime columnist at The Miami Herald who has known Whitlock for years.

At one point the Star was forced to suspended Whitlock for homophobic antics during an NFL game. He had to apologize for anti-semitic remarks regarding Asian-American NBA player Jeremy Lin while with Fox.

Many feel his race is the only reason Whitlock has been able to be employed while more talented sportswriters have been dumped at major publications around the country.

Once again, he seems to be following tradition by going after Evans.

“Having worked with Thayer Evans at Fox Sports, having followed his work for some time, I am completely and utterly flabbergasted that a legitimate news outlet would allow Thayer Evans to be involved in some type of investigative piece on college football that tears down a program, and particularly one that tears down Oklahoma State when it is no secret what a huge, enormous, gigantic Oklahoma homer Thayer Evans is,” Whitlock told WWLS-FM.

Whitlock concluded his trashing of Evans—who once worked at the New York Times-with the ultimate insult.

“Let me end by saying this and I honestly mean this without malice. It wouldn’t shock me if Thayer Evans couldn’t spell cat, and I say in all seriousness.”

ESPN has already been forced to apologize for Whitlock’s remarks.

“We have discussed Jason’s comments with him. They were personal in nature, they do not represent ESPN and they are not acceptable based on the standards we have set,” ESPN said in a statement to Ed Sherman of TheShermanReport.com.

Whitlock’s antics come as no surprise to anyone who has followed his career over the years. ESPN will likely be apologizing for his antics until the network finally gets tired of them and turns him loose.
