The Kansas City Chiefs public relations staffers faced an awful situation last week when one of its players murdered one of his girlfriends and then drove his Bentley to Arrowhead Stadium where he committed suicide in front of team officials.

The story of Jovan Belcher immediately went national and the Chiefs’ PR people had to deal with a myriad of tough issues, including the game being played the next day outside the stadium where Belcher had killed himself. The players bragging about the need to have guns did not help the situation.

We praised them for a job well done, particularly for walking a fine line between somehow recognizing Belcher prior to its game with Carolina. Instead, the team had a moment of silence for those affected by domestic violence. Nice tactic.

Concern then began to focus on the three-month old baby, Zoey, that Belcher had fathered with the woman he murdered.

The NFL announced that Zoey would be supported by the league through college as the beneficiary of the collective bargaining agreement signed last year. She will receive $108,000 a year for four years. When she turns 5, she will get $48,000, then $52,000 a year until she is 18 or 23, depending on whether she goes to college.

This does not include any monies she will receive from the estate of her parents. Belcher’s Bentley has to be worth at least $200,000.

The Chiefs, however, decided to generate even more positive PR by announcing that the team was also starting a trust for Zoey and is asking fans to help provide funds.

Dana Wright and Scott Parks on the highly popular afternoon talk radio show on KMBZ-980 AM criticized the latest PR tactic.

“Zoey is going to be receiving more than a million dollars from the NFL and now the Chiefs want people to donate even more to her?” asked Parks. Wright, who rarely agrees with Parks on anything, actually agreed with his view.
