WHITLOCK RESPONDS:
Ironically, Whitlock seems to have slammed his former employer, the Kansas City Star, which officially announced his departure (below), along with other media outlets in a recent Tweet.
Prior to this Tweet he has promised fans an explanation of his absence for months. He lied.
"I'm going to explain. I'm just letting the liars wrap up their false narratives first."

KC STAR: WHITLOCK OFFICIALLY GONE
He had not writtten a word for the newspaper since May 26, But the Kansas City Star kept announcing simply that "Jason Whitlock is on vacation."
Most media watchers knew that really wasn't the case.
In the meantime, Holly Lawton, sports editor at the newspaper, announced her resignation with the newspaper, which was still reeling from the departure of the newspaper's premier columnist Joe Posnanski to Sports Illustrated.
It is now official that Whitlock is departing the Star with the generic "to pursue other interests" reason given by the newspaper. As one might expect, his departure story is the most read and commented one at the newspaper today.
Considered a mediocre columnist, Whitlock was able to leverage race for maximum exposure and controversy while often attempting to copy the late great sports columnist Mike Royko. It should be noted that fellow Star journalists Wright Thompson, Joe Posnanski and Mechelle Voepel all received prestigious "Joe McGuff Sports Journalist of the Year" awards in KC (along with other sports journalists in radio and TV). Whitlock was never given the award.
Towards the end, Whitlock even seemed to be taking shots at Star managing editor Mike Fannin.  Fannin was previously the Star's sports editor and Whitlock's boss.
The latest controversy was a pattern that has played itself out several times during Whitlock's career. He has been fired by both local KC radio sports talk stations, ESPN and KMBC. He was suspended by the Star for press box antics when he got involved with fans and wrote a message saying that quarterback Drew Bledsoe was "gay."
"Whitlock had a tendency to burn bridges every place where he worked," said Kevin Kietzman at WHB, who had a major run-in at the station with Whitlock. Whitlock then jumped to a rival sports talker where he quit on the air in dramatic fashion.
Former Kansas City Star reporter Jim Fitzpatrick even wrote Whitlock's departure announcement on Aug. 2. The Pitch's Justin Kendall also did a superb summary.
It is now official and was announced formally in the KC Star:

Columnist Jason Whitlock is leaving The Kansas City Star

After 16 years of writing thought-provoking and popular columns for The Kansas City Star, Jason Whitlock is leaving the paper to pursue other interests.

Whitlock joined The Star in 1994 as a general-interest sports columnist after writing for newspapers in Ann Arbor, Mich., and Charlotte, N.C. He immediately struck a chord with local readers and ultimately developed a national audience through his column and work in other media, including radio and television.

In 2008, he won a National Journalism Award for commentary from The Scripps Howard Foundation. He was the first sportswriter to win this honor. He also has won numerous other awards and has appeared on programs as varied as Oprah Winfrey, Lou Dobbs and ESPN’s "The Sports Reporters." He continues to write columns for FoxSports.com.

A 1990 graduate of and former football starter at Ball State University, Whitlock is an Indianapolis native.

FEEDBACK

ISSUE OF CREDIBILITY
"I was at a Star meeting when Jason was the guest speaker.  During Q&A is asked him if his credibility relied on being a newspaper columnist to give him so many other opportunities on the web, radio and TV.  His answer was, and I paraphrase, "without my newspaper column it would be nothing."  We'll see."

SOUR NOTE

"You wrote the it was ironic that Jason Whitlock seemingly “slammed his former employer, the Kansas City Star.” Excuse me? I have only witnessed Mr. Whitlock’s career from afar, but it seems that he does not leave any of his former places of employment on good terms. And all of the departures are very public. 810 WHB, 610 Sports and ESPN all come to mind. And now, The Star. I would expect him to leave on a sour note. Let the mudslinging begin…"  ---Pepe

SLAMMING?

"Um, I think he's slamming you, Hearne, etc."
