11-10-2009 BLC EXCLUSIVE NEW PORTABLE PEOPLE METERS SHAKING UP KC RADIO MARKET The Kansas City radio market is now officially a "Portable People Meter" (PPM) market with the first results for October 2009 recently released and providing some stunning information. In the past, radio station results were compiled via Arbitron Ratings Books that were completed by selected individuals and stations were provided three-month average ratings. However, the overall accuracy of the ratings books was often questioned since it was felt listeners really did not necessarily write down all their listening habits. The introduction of PPMs has changed all that (LINK). Now selected individuals wear meters that accurately registers every station they listen to, if they change channels, or even if a station is playing in the background at work or in a supermarket. The October ratings for Kansas City radio stations has produced some interesting results (right). In mornings (M-F, age 25-54) in the time period of 6-10 a.m. The Rock is the unquestioned leader with a 10.2 rating while urban station KPRS, long-time market leader, dropped to 8th at 5.0. The Fox finished second at 7.9 followed by KBEQ-FM third at 7.0. NewsRadio KMBZ's morning duo of Ellen Schenk and E.J. Becker finished a strong fourth at 5.8, easily outdistancing KCMO morning talker Chris Stigall, who finished 21st with a 2.1 rating. In sports talk, WHB-810 finished in 9th place in the morning demo at 4.9 compared to rival KCSP at 3.0 in 14th place. However, the stunner was that KCSP's Nick Wright beat WHB in the 9-11 a.m. time in one major demographic, which included WHB icon Soren Petro. In afternoons (M-F, 3-7 p.m.) The Rock was again victorious with an 8.4 rating followed by Fox at 8.1. In sports talk, WHB finished fourth (6.2) with KCSP a distant 14th at 3.7.
PETRO GONE "It should be noted that Petro was gone for over two weeks in October and the show was decidedly more dull without him.It will be interesting to see if Wright can hold those listeners with Petro now back in full voice." ----Jeffrey Adams
KPRS "Man, this is devastating for KPRS." --Malcom Haney
