Two of the Kansas City Star's leading sportswriters---Jeff Passan and Wright Thompson--- have departed for greener pastures. The Star's Sports Department is considered one of the best in the nation and does not announce departures. The Thompson departure was first announced here (see below) in May. Passan, an award-winning reporter who previously was the national baseball writer for the Star, joined Yahoo!Sports as a baseball reporter a few months ago. He currently does reports on KCSP-610 in the mornings. Passan, whose father is a long-time sports reporter at The Plain Dealer in Cleveland, is a journalism graduate from Syracuse University. WRIGHT THOMPSON TO DEPART KANSAS CITY STAR FOR ESPN.COM Wright Thompson, one of the leading investigative/feature writers at the Kansas City Star, will be leaving the newspaper to assume full-time writing duties at ESPN.com, according to sources (5/23). He is expected to depart in the next few weeks. The blow comes at a time when the Star is desperately trying to keep customers as the paper undergoes a new makeover in size, color and format. Thompson, a University of Missouri graduate, has won numerous journalism awards since joining the paper and is nationally recognized for his in-depth pieces. He was expected to move from the Sports Dept. to FYI at the paper until the new position with ESPN came available. A native of Clarksdale, Mississippi, Thompson has also written for The Times-Picayne of New Orleans. He will relocate to Memphis.
