STEVE ROSE AND HEARNE CHRISTOPHER SQUARE OFF

ON 'TALK BACK LIVE' ON KCPT

It was local TV at its finest as two individuals who really seem to genuinely dislike each other sat down for an interview.  Steve Rose, longtime publisher/columnist for the Sun Newspapers, and Hearne Christopher, Kansas City Star (gossip?) columnist, squared off on Rose's new "Talk Back Live" show on KCPT (5/3).

Also, on 5/5, Dan Margolies of the Kansas City Star reported that Rose has sold the Sun Publications building in Overland Park that housed the newspaper his family once owned.

    Show highlights:

    *  When Christopher wrote intimate details about Rose's 8,500 sq. ft. home in Mission Hills, Rose's wife considered it an "invasion of privacy."

    * HC: "I try not to pry into private things..."

    *  After Rose wrote a biting column in the Sun titled "Don't Talk To Hearne"  , Christopher was called on the carpet by executives at the Star.

    *  Within a few months of the column Rose was speaking with Christopher again. Rose said he felt it would be hypocritical for him to ask people for quotes, but for him not to comment to Christopher.

    *  SR: "Why are you a gossip columnist?"  HC: "I kind of hate calling it a gossip column.  I do a lot of news, serious news. It's really news reporting about people."

    * SR: "Are there people you don't write about?  Are people like Don Hall off-limits?"  HC:  "No, they just don't cut a high enough figure."

    *  SR: If I were writing a column about Hearne Christopher I would say "Did you know?:

            *  That he is from a very prominent family?

            *  That he belongs to the most exclusive country club in Kansas City, the Kansas City CC. (sarcastically) "Tell us about all the times you have written about members there?"

            * SR:  It's amazing with all the stuff you have written that you have never been sued

            *  HC: "For the most part...I try to provide news."

            *  HC: "PR people don't provide a whole lot to my columns...except for someone in an area I cover like the Kansas City Brigade.  Brigade PR guy Rob Thomson is a real character."

            *  Caller:  Why do you focus on strip clubs?  HC: "I really don't do a whole bunch of strip clubs. I did go to the Chippendale Show last week."

            *  Any columns you wish you hadn't published?  Yea, the one where I said that Buck Buchanan had been doing landscaping downtown (Buchanan used to play for the Chiefs died in 1992).

            *  Caller: "The Pitch did a nasty article on you..."  HC: "The Pitch dishes it out, but they are often not on the other end of criticism."

            *  SR: "You don't write the headlines for your column.  Your copy gets edited." HC:  "I have a lot of handlers I have to answer to..."
