NOTES FROM KC PRESS CLUB EVENT....

The Heart of America Press Club hosted a roundtable conversation (4/5) on the changing face of news coverage in print, television, radio, and on-line.  The event was held at the studios at  KSHB-TV41 and attended by about 25.

Panelists included Dave Helling of the Kansas City Star, Rick Musser, University of Kansas journalism professor and Stephen Steigman of KCUR public radio.  Discussions analyzed the growth of local television and radio news coverage, the changing face of newspapers, the future of media convergence, and the challenges all members of local media face in an increasingly competitive news market.

    * In 1977 television passed newspapers as the preferred source of news

    * The profit margins at TV stations are a phenomenal 40%

    * Newspapers today are about 30% editorial and 70% advertising

    *  Television used to feature about 16 minutes of news per half-hour; today that has been reduced to 10-11 minutes

    *  People have more access information than ever before.  Consumers can create their own news. They are becoming 'Citizen Journalists'

    * The news brand is a key to success.  The New York Times is linked to more often than Google

    *  The slogan for what leads newscasts is "Dead is News!!"

    *  The first Amendment protects opinion, not necessarily truth."
