The movie “Anchorman” made fun of TV anchors and the fact that some will simply read anything put on a teleprompter.
Of course, that was simply a joke highlighted by actor Will Ferrell. Maybe not.
Tori Campbell, a Fox news anchor at KTVU in politically correct San Francisco, made herself a national laughingstock by simply parroting the names given to her of the pilots involved with the recent Asiana plane crash.
In a serious mode the anchor announced that KTVU had learned the names of the four pilots: “Captain Sum Ting Wong,” “Wi Tu Lo,” “Ho Lee Fuk” and “Bang Ding Ow.” The only saving grace of the incident is Campbell pronounced “Ho Lee Fuk” as “Fook” and not as the infamous F-word.
Anyone with any common sense would have realized the names were jokes, but not her. She simply read what was put in front of her.
In the end, it is likely the station will find that a number of people were listing the names as a practical joke that somehow made it to the teleprompter. The jokes were as dumb as any Bart Simpson has done for years (Link).
KTVU has apologized for the incident and the NTSB said an intern was responsible for confirming the names. And now Asiana Airlines is threatening to sue the TV station over its screw-up.
The original apology follows a corporate tradition of always blaming the lowest person in the organization for any major screw-up.
Not to be outdone in falling for Bart Simpson humor, USA Today quoted “Howie Felterbush” commenting at a rally after the Trayvon Martin verdict was announced. It was likely that “Harry Balls” or “Ben Dover” were not available for comment.

BEYOND BELIEF
It is beyond belief that this made it on air.
TV NEWS IS ALL ENTERTAINMENT
I don’t think it’s beyond belief at all. There’s not a great deal of thinking required in local TV news… because their audience doesn’t demand it. Moreover, it’s all entertainment from the time you turn it on to the time you turn it off.
As FCC commissioner Newton Minow said back in the sixties, television is a “Vast Wasteland.”

HILARIOUS!
This is hilarious!!! It doesn’t surprise me that she just read that. Especially if the first time she was seeing it was on a teleprompter.
PAYBACK
Hilarious! Payback for the stupid sensationalism of local news.
