Summary:  Kudos to Nichole Teich and the investigative team at KSHB for an enlightening sweeps piece examining re-shelving of meat by area stores.  

KSHB DOES BLOCKBUSTER SWEEPS PIECE

     As we enter the TV November sweeps period (which officially kicked off 11/2) viewers are going to be bombarded with a number of sensational, over-the-top, over-hyped "investigative" pieces throughout the month.  Some will turn out to be downright embarrassing.

    That being said, kudos go out to Nichole Teich (L) at KSHB-TV41 (NBC) for her investigative piece (11/2) that examined supermarkets who routinely accepted returns of meat and simply re-shelved the items.  Teich examined a variety of stores throughout the Kansas City area over a four-month period.

    Teich found that of the 20 stores examined, 15 (or 75%) re-shelved meat that was returned, which is expressly forbidden by FDA food guidelines.  When Teich returned the meat to the 15 violators fully 80% (12) re-shelved the meat again!!

    According to KSHB, "Once perishable items – like meat – leave a store, the FDA considers them contaminated.  If a customer returns it, the store can accept the meat, but cannot resell it to you. That is what is supposed to happen.
