07-30-2009 KMBC WINS JULY SWEEPS; KSHB IMPROVES; KCTV PLUMMETS The ratings are out for the recently completed July TV sweeps period (July 2 though July 29), and once again Kansas City's ABC affiliate KMBC 9 captured the top spot in Nielsen rating periods at the 5, 6 and 10 p.m. news periods.
KMBC 9 News at 5:00 p.m. was the only local television newscast in this time period with strong year-to-year gains, finishing the month with a 7.3 Household (HH) rating/17 HH share---a 20% increase from July 2008.The newscast boasted a 59% advantage over its closest competitor.
KMBC 9 News at 6:00 p.m. won its time slot with a 7.5/15, easily out-delivering its second place competitor by 50%.
Growing 45% from its ABC primetime lead-in, KMBC 9 News at 10 p.m. ranked as Kansas City�s �most watched� late news, with a 9.1/16.The newscast holds a dominate 34% advantage over its closest competitor.
While KMBC won the 6 p.m. news period with a 7.5 rating, KSHB-TV 41, the NBC affiliate, saw its ratings at 6 p.m. jump fully 33% from the same time last year. The dramatic increase pushed KSHB into second place ahead of KCTV5. Here are the ratings increases/decreases from last year at 6 p.m.: KMBC 7.5 (-5%); KSHB 5.0 (+2%); KCTV 4.4 (-33%); WDAF 4.0 (+2%). Overall, KSHB was up in nearly all major newscasts and was the only KC station to gain market share at 10 p.m. from last year (its weekday 9:45-10 p.m. lead in was up 59%). It also was the only station to gain market share in the second quarter during the 10 p.m. news. KMBC�s strong ratings performance in July, comes on the heels of an equally impressive May book, when the station earned the lofty distinction as the #1 ABC affiliate in the top 50 markets. The biggest ratings loser from July 2008 ratings was CBS affiliate KCTV5 which was down in all newscasts:
