KCTV-5 CAPTURES PRESTIGIOUS HEADLINER AWARD They are celebrating at KCTV-5 following the announcement (3/9) the Kansas City CBS affiliate had been awarded second-place honors in health reporting by the prestigious 2006 National Headliner Award program for a story examining the actual costs for healthcare services. It was the second straight year the station has won a Headliner award. In 2005, KCTV-5 took second place honors for its ground-breaking investigation into online pedophiles. The health story was reported by anchor/health reporter Carolyn Long, with Ken Ullery taking photographer/editor honors. Sam Zeff was the executive producer for the piece. The investigation aired during the July book and took a 10.4/15 rating/share and improved it to 14.8/23. The investigation examined why hospitals refuse to tell people what they charge for services. With 30 percent of the people in Kansas City having no health insurance, KCTV felt comparing prices for everything from an appendectomy to labor and delivery would be becoming crucial. KCTV asked for a price list from a dozen area hospitals. Most refused, but after persistent reporting three hospitals finally provided the numbers. Founded in 1934 by the Press Club of Atlantic City, the National Headliner Awards program is one of the oldest and largest annual contests recognizing journalistic merit in the communications industry. The awards will be presented in May in Atlantic City.
