KMBC WINS JULY SWEEPS; KSHB IMPROVES; KCTV PLUMMETS
The ratings are out for the recently completed July TV sweeps period (July 2 though July 29), and once again Kansas City's ABC affiliate KMBC 9 captured the top spot in Nielsen rating periods at the 5, 6 and 10 p.m. news periods.
  • KMBC 9 News at 5:00 p.m. was the only local television newscast in this time period with strong year-to-year gains, finishing the month with a 7.3 Household (HH) rating/17 HH share---a 20% increase from July 2008. The newscast boasted a 59% advantage over its closest competitor.
  • KMBC 9 News at 6:00 p.m. won its time slot with a 7.5/15, easily out-delivering its second place competitor by 50%.
  • Growing 45% from its ABC primetime lead-in, KMBC 9 News at 10 p.m. ranked as Kansas Citys most watched late news, with a 9.1/16.  The newscast holds a dominate 34% advantage over its closest competitor.
While KMBC won the 6 p.m. news period with a 7.5 rating, KSHB-TV 41, the NBC affiliate, saw its ratings at 6 p.m. jump fully 33% from the same time last year.  The dramatic increase pushed KSHB into second place ahead of KCTV5.
Here are the ratings increases/decreases from last year at 6 p.m.:
KMBC 7.5 (-5%); KSHB 5.0 (+2%); KCTV 4.4 (-33%); WDAF 4.0 (+2%).
Overall, KSHB was up in nearly all major newscasts and was the only KC station to gain market share at 10 p.m. from last year (its weekday 9:45-10 p.m. lead in was up 59%).  It also was the only station to gain market share in the second quarter during the 10 p.m. news.
KMBCs strong ratings performance in July, comes on the heels of an equally impressive May book, when the station earned the lofty distinction as the #1 ABC affiliate in the top 50 markets.
The biggest ratings loser from July 2008 ratings was CBS affiliate KCTV5 which was down in all newscasts:
5 am   down 18%
5:30 am  down 15%
6 a.m. down 9%
Noon down 41%
4 p.m.  down 31%
5 p.m.  down 26%
6 p.m. down 33%
10 p.m. down 25%
