02-23-2011 'THE VIBE' LEADS LATEST KANSAS CITY RADIO RATINGS 'The Vibe," KCHZ 95.7, captured the radio ratings lead in the Kansas City market in January with a Portable People Meter (PPM) rating of 6.6 as the Top 40 station barely edged oldies station KCMO-FM, which came in at 6.5. Classic rocker KCFX finished third at 6.2 as Cumulus-owned stations took the top three spots. (LINK TO ALL RATINGS) Wilks Broadcasting's KCKC, which advertised itself as "Kansas City's Christmas Station" and began playing holiday music November 1, led the December holiday radio ratings with a strong 7.9 rating. However, once the holidays ended the station plunged to a 2.4 in this book. In sports talk radio, Union Broadcasting's WHB-810 AM finished in the 12th spot overall with a 3.9 rating after months of 3.8 and 3.4. On the other hand, rival KCSP found itself in 18th place in the market as the Entercom station notched a tepid straight 2.1 rating to follow an anemic 2.0 rating. Kansas City's talk radio stations are plummeting in the ratings these days with NewsRadio 980 KMBZ finishing with a 3.4 rating in January, good for the 14th spot in the market. Rival talker KCMO managed only a 2.0 in January placing the Cumulus-owned station at 20th in KC. (These PPM ratings represent a wide demographic of listeners age 6-plus and provides a good snapshot of overall listenership. For sales purposes stations often break out specific demographics.)
02-24-2011 TWO SPORTS TALKERS? "I would say the market can't support two major sports talk stations. And I think the other "talk" stations would have a much broader base if they broadcast traditional talk and not 24-hour conservative spin." ---David Remley
