The ongoing battle of words between the Kansas City Chiefs and Jack Harry never lets up!! For weeks Harry and Chiefs' PR staffer Bob Gretz have gone at each other (see below) in a media battle outlined here and by KC Star columnist Jeffrey Flanagan. Just when you thought it had settled down, Harry blasted the Chiefs' (11/27) organization, calling the PR staffers "the worst ever in the history of the Chiefs and the worst in the NFL." During his entire commentary/rant KSHB-TV41 ran footage of the Chiefs' top PR guy Bob Moore, but never specifically mentioned him by name. Harry's Sunday night sports report started on a high note as the Chiefs had just beaten the two-time Super Bowl champion New England Patriots. Then it led into a discussion of the new Arena football team coming to Kansas City with the strange new nickname of "Brigade." Harry noted how well the Arena team is doing media relations--- unlike the Chiefs. And then the rant against the Chiefs' PR folks went into high gear.
From Jeffrey Flanagan's "Top of the Mornin'" column 11/11/05: "One day after Chiefs sideline reporter/Web columnist Bob Gretz lit up Channel 41’s Jack Harry on radio about the Priest Holmes “retirement” story, calling Harry a “lamebrain,” Gretz was back on the rampage Thursday. According to the media blog (and a good one) www.bottomlinecom.com , Gretz said on KCMO’s Van Patrick show that Harry just “sits in his office and doesn’t go out and do anything.” Gretz also took a shot at us, suggesting that Joe Posnanski “lives in a fairy-tale world of sports,” that Jason Whitlock “just writes about himself” and that Jeffrey Flanagan “should have better things to do than write about me and (Jack Harry).” Actually, I think Gretz has all of us confused. What he meant to say is that Jeffrey Flanagan just “sits in his office and doesn’t go out and do anything, lives in a fairy-tale world, just writes about himself, and should have better things to do, period.” Seriously, does anyone know the source of Gretz’s misdirected anger? He won’t return my calls anymore."
Gretz went on the Van Patrick Show (11/11) for the third straight day, this time (we have heard) to discuss the Flanagan column. Harry responded yesterday to Gretz's (and/or the Chiefs') ongoing barrage against him in typical Harry style: "Anything that Bob Gretz says...doesn't surprise me. I take the guy with a grain of salt. He's bought and paid for and is nothing more than Carl Peterson's mouthpiece. "The local media has a history...of trying to discredit anyone who comes up with any kind of scoop. They're always looking for flaws. If those people would expend that type of energy in breaking a story...we would all provide a better service to our community." And, following the Chiefs' pathetic 14-3 loss to Buffalo (11/13), Harry talked about the Chiefs' attacks aimed at him during his Sunday night broadcast. Not surprisingly, during his report he provided both positive and negative fan reaction to his reporting of the Priest Holmes story. In the background were a variety of camera shots of Bob Gretz along the sidelines.
