Summary:  Kudos to Wayne Godsey of KMBC who is one of the few GMs willing to take an actual stand on issues. On (6/19) he joined other media outlets blasting the Kansas City Royals.

June 19, 2006: Royal Relations
Wayne Godsey, KMBC President, General Manager

The Kansas City Royals again own the worst record in baseball. They have now proven to be as inept at public relations as they are on the field.

Last week, the Royals revoked the media credentials of two local radio reporters one day after the two asked tough questions about how owner David Glass handled the firing of former general manager Allard Baird.

The questions came at a news conference announcing the hiring of new GM Dayton Moore. While the questions may have upset ownership, they were nothing more than what any ordinary fan would have asked, if given the opportunity.

The Royals are a private business, and they can do whatever they want. But such a heavy-handed reaction from a team that has just been handed millions in local tax dollars is troubling, to say the least.

If reporters and fans aren't questioning the competence of ownership, they should be. As the Kansas City Press Club said in criticizing the royals action, "This is hardball, not softball."
