FOX4'S FRANK BOAL CALLS IT QUITS AFTER 28 YEARS Long-time Sports Director Frank Boal has accepted a buyout package and will be leaving FOX 4 effective June 30. The announcement was made to employees at WDAF-FOX 4 this morning. His final broadcast will be Tuesday (6/30) night during the 10 p.m. news, the day his current contract expires. His position will not be filled. Boal has been the Sports Director at FOX 4 since 1981. He had a regular sports talk show on WHB until going part-time in that capacity on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. During his career he has won numerous awards, including being named the "Joe McGuff Sports Journalist of the Year" in Kansas City in 2008. In addition to his regular anchoring and reporting duties, Boal anchored the popular 'FOX 4 Sports Sunday' show that aired on Sunday nights during FOX 4 News at 10. A star running back on his Central Catholic High School football team in Pittsburgh, his teammates were inducted into the Central Catholic Hall of Fame in April 1999. After high school Boal went to Villanova University where he was a three year starter and co-captain of the Wildcats from 1966-68. He racked up over 3,000 yards of total offense (rushing, receiving, punt and kickoff returns) and still holds the school record for punt return yardage in a career. After graduation, he coached football at Villanova for five years before moving into broadcasting. He worked first in radio, then crossing over to TV, and moved up the broadcasting ladder with stops in Grand Coulee and Lake Chelan, Washington; Eureka, CA. and Green Bay before joining the FOX 4 Sports Team. Boal has covered virtually every major sporting event, including the Royals 1985 World Series Championship, Major League All-Star games, the NFL's Chiefs; Missouri, Kansas and Kansas St. college athletics; the former Kansas City Kings and NBA playoffs; and golfing Hall of Famer Tom Watson. He and his wife, Jan, plan to stay in Overland Park. They have five children and one grandchild.
