You almost have to feel sorry for James Damore, an engineer at Google who had the temerity to even question the issue of gender equality in the tech industry in a lengthy memo he posted.
“Damore asserted in his 3,000-word document that circulated inside the company last week that ‘Google’s left bias has created a politically correct monoculture’ which prevented honest discussion of diversity,” according to the Reuters news agency (Link).
The Harvard grad learned very quickly that free speech is not a right in the corporate world. An honest discussion of an issue such as diversity will get you fired.
And, in his case, it did.
Google Chief Executive Sundar Pichai told employees in a note on Monday that portions of the anti-diversity memo “violate our Code of Conduct and cross the line by advancing harmful gender stereotypes in our workplace,” according to a copy of the note seen by Reuters.
Damore made the fatal mistake of thinking just because a company spouts that it wants free and open discussions of topics that it really does. In most cases, corporations preach one thing but act just the opposite.
Free speech to a corporation means toeing the company line. Corporations are not democracies. In fact, there is no constitutional right to free speech in the private sector (link).
In a TV interview with Tucker Carlson on Fox News (link) Damore noted Google didn’t even tell him what they disagreed with in his memo. No explanation other than he “Perpetuated gender stereotypes” was given for his firing.
During my corporate career, I have seen employees speak their minds during meetings and watch them literally dig their own graves. Often they were fired a few weeks later with some other nebulous reason given.
Many corporations monitor each and every email that is sent by their employees. Since they are company-owned computers all work done on them actually is owned by the corporation.
It is not unusual for tech folks at a company to have key words flagged (executive names, competitor names, curse words, etc.). If you say the CEO is a horse’s butt you can be guaranteed the CEO or one of his/her minions will see your email. It is not good for career longevity.
Unfortunately, Damore seemed to believe that places such as Google are run as bastions of free speech where open and honest discussion is encouraged. They aren’t.
Corporations are dictatorships. Just like dictatorships across the world, it is best to not speak out against them.

How many women does Google have installing Google Fiber? I’d bet close to zero.
