Was the mayor of Kansas
City making fun of traditional conservative values by posing in a 1950's
homemaker outfit for the cover of a gay publication?
That was the feeling of many
callers to Chris Stigall's morning radio talk show (5/30) on KCMO-710, who
thought her posing for the cover of "Camp" magazine sent that message.
Stigall thought it was a joke
when he was initially told she dressed like June Cleaver for the controversial
publication. However, he found that callers did not think her actions or
Lynn Franey's cute article in the Kansas City Star (below) on the issue
was funny at all.

Camp publisher John Long wrote in the edition: “How many U.S. cities have a
mayor with such a sense of humor that she would allow herself to be made up like
a 1950s housewife for the cover of the Kansas City Gay Pride Guide? You know the
answer. But we’re glad that Mayor Kay Barnes isn’t afraid to step outside of the
bounds of conventional photo shoots.”
Barnes assistant Steve Glorioso didn’t even know she had posed until a reporter
called. Once he stopped laughing, he said: “She has long been an advocate for
diversity in many areas (including gay and lesbian rights). … She has pushed
through two initiatives: We have a domestic partner registry in Kansas City and
domestic partner benefits (for gay and unmarried employees).” He laughed again.
“ … Sounds like she deserves to be on the cover.”
