Jonathan Weir, most recently a radio personality at Entercom’s WSKY in Gainesville, FL, will replace Chris Merrill on “The Voice of Merrill” show weekdays from 9 – 11 a.m on NewsRadio 98.1FM/980 AM KMBZ.
Merrill recently took a new position at KOGO in San Diego and has been doing shows at KOGO and KMBZ for about a month.
Weir’s currently unnamed show will officially start Monday, April 30, and cover a wide range of topics affecting Kansas City.
A St. Louis native, he started in radio at age 22 and worked as a producer on numerous shows there before joining WSKY (The Sky 97.3 FM). He most recently has been a producer and co-host of the station’s “Drive Time Happy Hour” show.
“KMBZ is a heritage station in Kansas City, I knew and listened to KMBZ before any other News/Talk station, even before those in St. Louis”, says Weir.  “I couldn’t be happier to be joining such a landmark station in the Midwest.  I’m inspired and so thankful to everyone at KMBZ for giving me this incredible opportunity.”
KMBZ Program Director Jack Landreth says he anticipates KC liking Weir’s talk show style.
“Jon’s enthusiasm and unique approach to his audience instantly drew me in as a listener first,” says Landreth. “His ability to weave his life experiences into the fabric of the show is a real quality that endears him to his listeners.”
Weir is married to his high school sweetheart, Katie, and they have a young son, Henry.

Interesting, I’ve got 50 years of St. Louis blood running through me and have never heard of the guy. He must be pretty young to have listened to KMBZ before the 50,000 red-hot watts of KMOX because you can’t get 980′s signal in St. Louis. 810 yes, 610 at night, but not 980. This should be interesting to see how KC reacts to him on-air.

I always liked you Scott until now learning you are one of those St. Louis people…Hey, I’m willing to give the new guy a chance. Even if he is from St. Louis.

  2. Tim Kridel says:

I have a tough time believing that someone growing up in STL listened to KMBZ before KMOX. Even if he got into DXing at a young age, KMBZ is still a rarity in STL.

Have listening to Jon the last year in Gainesville Fl. WSKY. Loved his show. Kansas City has gained a winner.

  4. DEAR KMBZ’S CEO: THANK YOU FOR MAKING CHANGES TO YOUR SHOWS IN TAKE RADIO.RUSH, PARKS,DARLA J COME ACROSS AS HATEFUL,RACIST, TALK SHOW DJS.

YOU NEED TO REPLACE ALL THE TALK SHOWS WITH SHOWS THAT BRING OUT THE BEST POSTIVE THINGS ABOUT OUR CITY.DARLA SHOW ,RUSH, AND PARKS. ARE AWAYS PUTTING THE PEOPLE OF COLOR DOWN AS WELL AS TAKING DOWN TO THEM!THEY YELL DOWN TO PEOPLE TO PUSH THIER VIEWS WHICH ARE HATEFUL, AND RACIST.SOME OF THE THINGS THEY SAY ABOUT OUR PEOPLE OF COLOR IS GROSS AND SICKING!

MANY PEOPLE TALK ABOUT THIS SHOWS BUT ARE SCARE TO SAY ANYTHING ABOUT IT.SO I AM SPEAKING OUT AS A CONCERN TAX-PAYERS AND ARRP. MEMBERS !GIVE US POSTIVE TALK SHOWS THE BRINGS OUT THE GREAT THINGS HAPPENING IN KANSAS CITY.THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME!

I need to cover several points with you Florentino. The two easiest are AARP and tax-payers. Neither AARP nor tax-payers pay for the programming on this radio station. Next, let me cover the part about hateful and racist, etc. Most “people of color” are, admittedly, liberal. They vote Democrat and they believe in big government. I suspect that you fall into that category. Since you are a big government liberal who prefers their plantation to competition and excellence these shows aren’t geared towards you so you probably are offended. Let me suggest that you spend your time watching and listening to the like-minded folks on MSNBC. You’ll be happier because they will be saying the things that you like to hear even though they are false. There really isn’t any liberal talk radio for you to listen to because no one listens to them and their programs always fold due to non-interest.

Here is an audio clip of a telephone interview of Jonathan Weir recapping the January 31, 2012 Florida Republican Primary, broadcast by WBEN-AM Radio in Buffalo, NY: http://audio.wben.com/a/51432075/florida-primary-recap-wsky-s-jonathan-weir.htm (5:22)

John, giving him a chance is problematic. At the rate of audience cume loss stations continue to experience, it’s fine to hear a new voice from another market but he/she better have a track record that’s above and beyond the baseline. I just think his quote is very strange. One thing about being in St. Louis around KMOX: If you’re in the business, even remotely, it’s talk culture influences you. I mean, who was he listening to at KMBZ growing up, Jack Cashill and Mary O’Halloran? We’ve had great talk mentors over the years with national clout, Jim White, Anne Keefe (stil the best female N/T show host ever on radio). J.C. Corcoran just got fired yesterday even though his audience track record is solid. I can think of 10 hosts who would have been killers in that time slot, Scott Allen Miller just one of them.

Dear KMBZ your station sucks. I listen to conservative radio online. You need a Dana Loesch type but too afraid to get one. That woman evenings is boring.

  8. John says:

I’m looking forward to hearing Jonathan tomorrow morning. I think Chris Merrill is a decent guy but he really isn’t in tune with today’s Conservatives.

  9. Jonathan A says:

    WEIR SUCKS, BUT…
Jonathan Weir sucks but not as bad as Merrill. Good time of the day to change the channel to nearly anything else. His extremely immature approach to topics makes me want to vomit. A poor representation of conservative values, professionalism, and knowledge.
Can I do better, probably not but I am not a radio talk show host, I work in a rock quarry so what do I know.

    QUICK TO JUDGE
I know these posts are over a year old but I just have to comment how ugly some of them are.

Today no one wants to ever give anyone a chance and are to quick to judge. Personally I listen to his show a little each day and I like it but I did not arrive at that decision the first time I heard Weir, but then again I like to give everyone a chance. Even you people that are so negative about almost everything.

    LIKES THE GUY?
I think Weir has proven that he has a decent show, even though he’s a kind of a bitch. I often text his show and like to screw with his head, but the fact is I like the guy.
