Almost as sickening as the massacre of so many innocent children and adults in Newtown, CT, is the word now that the handful of members of Topeka’s Westboro Baptist Church plan to protest outside the elementary school.
Shirley Phelps-Roper announced the group’s plan via Twitter: “Westboro will picket Sandy Hook Elementary School to sing praise to God for the glory of his work in executing his judgment.”
In a second Tweet she wrote: “Praise God! You raise the children to rebel against God. You know better. Now, the worst grade school shooting in US History.”
The news media in Kansas, Missouri and much of the Midwest already know that the members of Westboro will go anywhere and do anything to get publicity. Over the years media outlets in our area have learned to virtually ignore their awful protests at funerals, churches, plane crashes, etc.
The area’s leading blogger, Tony Botello of tonyskansascity.com, is reporting that many on-line sites are printing personal information about members of the Westboro group in protest of their antics. A Kansas City-based site, KCSR, also has a link to the group’s information and a national site, mentalfloss.com, is posting “10 Nonviolent Ways to Thwart a Westboro Baptist Church Protest.”
While the temptation is for the media is to give these people exposure because of their outrageous antics, our plea to national media outlets is to totally ignore their protests at the school. They need publicity like a crack addict needs drugs.
Do not allow them to demean this national tragedy by their publicity tactics.
The people of that community are trying to deal with a tragedy that has rocked our nation to its core. We need to heal, not listen to or give publicity to the awful messages from the Westboro members.
Do not give them the media exposure they so desperately crave.
