USA TODAY PROFILES GROWTH OF PINKEL'S MIZZOU SALARY
The timing could not have not been worse for USA Today to do a front-page sports report on University of Missouri Football Coach Gary Pinkel and the huge growth of his salary since he came to Mizzou nine years ago.
Coming off the school's embarrassing 40-32 home field loss to Baylor on Saturday, the USA Today article highlighted Pinkel and his assistants' huge salary increases at Mizzou.
The team is currently 5-4 overall and 1-4 in the Big 12 Conference.
"A little less than a year ago, the school gave Pinkel a second contract extension and raise in three years and his third since he arrived at Mizzou in late 2000," said USA Today, noting MU has instituted a hiring freeze, a wage freeze and cutbacks in the system's pension plan.
However, from 2006 to 2008 Pinkel's salary climbed 131% and 331% since coming to Missouri.
"His salary guarantee has more than quadrupled in that time, to $2.52 million this season. His assistants' collective pay has more than doubled."
The average pay of a Missouri professor is $102,800.
