Nelson to assume editor duties in Lincoln.

BOTTOM LINE:  Michael "OJ" Nelson, 59, who was with the Kansas City Star for nearly 35 years and most recently as assistant managing editor for zoning and suburban news,  will assume duties as the editor of the Lincoln Journal Star April 21. He worked with the Lincoln Star's publisher, John Maher, when Maher was with the Star from 1995-2000.
Nelson is married to Christie Cater Nelson, an Ogallala (NE) native and freelance journalist. They have two daughters, Libby, a junior at Northwestern University, and Laura, a high school senior who will attend the University of Southern California in the fall.  03-27-2008

NELSON LEAVES STAR AFTER 35 YEARS

The Lincoln Journal Star has hired a veteran journalist from the Kansas City Star to become its new editor, according to the Associated Press.
Journal Star Publisher John Maher said Wednesday that he hired Michael Nelson, who takes over April 21.  Nelson succeeds Kathleen Rutledge, who resigned from Journal Star in November.
Nelson is currently an assistant managing editor for zoning and suburbs. He has spent nearly 35 years with the paper, which is based in Kansas City, Mo., and serves readers in Kansas and Missouri.
Nelson is a graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and went to high school in Omaha. The Journal Star has a daily circulation of nearly 77,000 and is owned by Lee Enterprises of Davenport, Iowa.
Lee owns 50 daily newspapers, including the St. Louis Post Dispatch, has a joint interest in five others, and operates more than 300 weekly newspapers and specialty publications in 23 states.
