12-09-2009 PITCH DOES MASTERFUL WRITE-UP ON KMBZ'S DARLA JAYE There are few things in life more nerve-wracking than doing a media interview and the having to experience the agonizing wait for the story to actually appear. Particularly when we are talking about a COVER story. Everyone sees a cover story! Your photo jumps out from the news racks. It's in restaurants, coffee shops, barber shops...everywhere! Will the article be positive or negative? Did I say something stupid to the interviewer? Will the editors pick out one dumb thing I said and focus on it? Will the photo make me look like an idiot? Those were just some of the emotions experienced by veteran conservative radio talker Darla Jaye, who hosts a daily evening show "980 Live With Darla Jaye!" on NewsRadio 980 KMBZ. She recently sat down for an extensive interview with the Pitch Weekly, Kansas City's leading alternative publication. Jaye has been with KMBZ since 2005 with most of that time hosting a lively morning talk show. She is now on evenings from 6-9 p.m. and delivering solid ratings despite her show frequently being pre-empted by "Tiger Talk" and other sports interruptions. Friends warned Jaye that an interview with the Pitch could turn out very badly, particularly since she is seriously considering a run for the Congressional seat being vacated by 3rd District Congressman Dennis Moore. However, the feisty Jaye took the challenge and sat down with the Pitch's Alan Scherstuhl for several hours and allow Scherstuhl and a photographer to shadow her every move. Jaye can now sleep again knowing that Scherstuhl and Pitch Weekly did an admirable job of profiling her and capturing her unique personality. (See tonyskansascity.com's write-up.) As an example, Scherstuhl, told the story of how his father once called into Jaye's show and she hung up on him. Jaye explained to Scherstuhl that she likes lively conversation and conflict on her show and not just a bunch of callers agreeing with her. She knows what makes for good radio. "If I were constantly saying 'Oh, you're right,' I wouldn't last. And if I don't make listeners laugh or get pissed or something, they're not going to be entertained," she was quoted saying. But, then Scherstuhl captures the side of Jaye that only her friends know. "After the interview, out in the parking lot, she asks, "Your dad? I didn't upset him, did I?" That is Darla Jaye.
