STAR'S HENDRICKS AND WIFE PEN GARDENING BOOK
Just in time for the Christmas gift-giving season, long-time Kansas City Star columnist Mike Hendricks and his wife, Roxie Hammill, have come out with a book titled "Mike & Roxie's Vegetable Paradise:Tips, Tales and Other Brave Stories About Growing Food in Kansas City."
The book takes a humorous look at vegetable gardening, along with providing some solid tips for gardening success.
The duo will be at the Lenexa Chili Challenge this Friday and Saturday in Old Town Lenexa autographing and selling copies of the 132-page book. The price is $24.95 and published by Star books.
"Mike and Roxie share their dirty little secrets to gardening success," says the Star site promoting the book. "The bottom line? You can do it! They serve up straight talk on choosing a garden site, starting seeds, weeding, watering, harvesting and more, all with an eye on the bottom line and what works – and doesn’t – in this part of the country."
The book highlights a 25-year love of gardening between the twosome. Hendricks, who joined the Star in 1985, and Roxie, a former political reporter, are both first-time authors.
They have grown as many as 46 tomato plants during a season. They do canning, grow all their own vegetables, make their own laundry soap and even hang clothes outside.
"Our friends joke that we are Amish," he says with a chuckle.
