Kansas City will have a new FM sports talk station when “Sports Radio 102.5 The Fan” officially launches on Jan. 2, according to a story in the Kansas City Business Journal.

It will be the third sports talk station in the Kansas City market with Entercom’s KCSP 610AM and Union Broadcasting’s sports talk leader WHB 810 AM firmly established.

The station, currently labeled “Funny 102.5,” will feature national programming from the CBS Sports Network in addition to sports talk from local hosts.  The network will have more than 100 stations.

The Sports Radio 102.5 FM is part of the Cumulus radio group.

(Note: We originally said it was KC’s “first” FM sports station.  See below)

    FILLS A VOID…
Wow, this fills a void. (sarcasm)

    DISAPPOINTED IN SWITCH
That really disappoints me…I was thrilled when All-Comedy radio made a comeback to the KC market…it had previously been on the AM band when I moved here in 2005. The comedy channel is a great alternative, and I’ll be very sad to see it disappear yet again.

    NO CLASSICAL, BUT
No classical music, but three sports radio stations…….sigh……

    ANYTHING IMPROVEMENT
At this point anything would be an improvement over Fescoe on entercom and most everything Union Broadcasting has to offer

    COMEDY ON HD?
Any word on whether Cumulus will continue the comedy on HD radio ? ( HD2 – HD3 )

    SORRY TO HEAR NEWS
Very sorry to hear this – we have plenty of sports talk already, I really enjoy having the comedy option for when you need a good pick me up – guess I’ll have to spring for satellite or buy more comedy for the iphone.
Granted, can’t stand to listen to some of the current sports talk outside of Petro and Fescoe. Bukaty is unbearable and Keitzman is the same thing every week while being condescending and rude to the few callers he takes.

    WAITING FOR BETTER
I can hardly wait … for something better to come along. How about a Music of Your Life station featuring the songs from America’s greatest generation? Southwest Missouri has a great station that plays those wonderful tunes from the ’40s, ’50s, ’60s and ’70s, KDMO.

    CORRECTION
This is not the first FM sports station in KC. 97.3 was ESPN between the Max and KLove formats.

  9. LAC says:

    WHO CARES?
No sports stations would fill the bill with me, Poor sports city to begin with, Long
history of losing and teams leaving, new arena and NO NHL… Who really cares.

    I’ll just not listen…

  10. 4TH STATION?
Actually, isn’t this the 4th such station? AM1510 does a fair amount of sports, esp. mornings and weekends.

    NICK THE DICK?
CBS sports network? As in Nick Wright’s current employer? Im thinking maybe cbs believes nick has more value in kc and could be a force to enter the market…..if it’s from 2-6……I’d listen.

    MORE SPORTS TALK?
Everyone I know listened to comedy radio, we talked about it all the time! Now sports talk….again?, Give me a break. I just love how these big companies think they know what people want. They are totally clueless. How about ASKING the people what they want. I can say that all of my friends are boycotting this supposed “new station” thats been done enough. I hope if fails and fails miserably!
